Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is located in Northern Thailand, around 700km north of the capital Bangkok. The city has a long history, once being the capital of the Lanna kingdom prior to joining the nation of Siam, modern day Thailand. It has been well recognised as one of the top tourism destinations in the world. The city has grown around the ancient old city, with temples surrounded by a moat and crumbling walls. The night bazaar and other daily markets are within walking distance of the old city, while the modern city grows with malls, hotels, restaurants.

The city is located on a flat plain surrounded by the mountainous region of northern Thailand, providing a rich area of natural beauty within easy reach of the city. Immediately overlooking the city to the west is Doi Suthep, a mountain held sacred to the city with the temple on Doi Suthep offering spectacular views over the city. To the north is Maerim, with a valley of attractions such as elephant camps. To the east is Doi Saket, a village beneath the spectacular Mae Kuang reservoir. To the south is Lamphun, and Doi Inthanon.

Hashers have been exploring the trails around Chiang Mai since 1981, and there are currently several kennels running from the city – more information can be found at Chiang Mai HHH. Chiang Mai is surrounded 360 degrees by trails and mountains accessible within an hour from the city, making it a hashing paradise. I wonder where the hare will take you….
